Self Worth: What is it?

In a world that often measures our worth by external achievements, appearances, and validations, it's easy to forget the innate value we all possess as individuals. Self-worth, the understanding of our inherent worthiness and significance, forms the foundation of our well-being and personal growth. It is a powerful force that can shape our mindset, relationships, and overall happiness.

Self-worth is not something we earn or acquire through external means. It exists within us from the moment we are born and remains constant throughout our lives. It is important to recognise that self-worth is not contingent upon our accomplishments, possessions, or the opinions of others. It is an intrinsic quality that arises simply from being human.

Each of us is a unique individual with our own set of strengths, talents, and experiences. Embracing our individuality and recognising the value it brings to the world is essential for developing a healthy sense of self-worth. Instead of comparing ourselves to others, we should focus on our own journey, celebrating our accomplishments and acknowledging our progress. Remember, you are one-of-a-kind, and that alone makes you valuable.

Self-compassion plays a crucial role in nurturing self-worth. It involves treating ourselves with kindness, understanding, and acceptance, especially during challenging times or when we make mistakes. Just as we would extend compassion to a friend in need, we should extend the same compassion to ourselves. Embracing self-compassion allows us to acknowledge our imperfections without judgement and fosters a sense of worthiness irrespective of our perceived flaws.

I heard Miss J sharing with Madam S the other day, that she just needs to bring on her growth mindset! Honestly, our kids are sometimes more in tune than we are :-) A growth mindset is the belief that our abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and effort. When we adopt a growth mindset, we view challenges and setbacks as opportunities for learning and growth rather than as reflections of our self-worth. By focusing on personal development and continuous improvement, we empower ourselves and reinforce a positive sense of worthiness.

The people we choose to surround ourselves with have a significant impact on our self-worth. Surrounding ourselves with individuals who value and appreciate us for who we are helps reinforce our sense of self-worth. Building healthy relationships based on mutual respect, support, and encouragement creates an environment that nurtures our confidence and self-belief.

Setting boundaries is an essential aspect of self-worth. It involves recognising our own needs, values, and limitations and communicating them effectively. When we establish healthy boundaries, we protect our emotional and mental well-being, allowing us to prioritise self-care without guilt. Engaging in activities that bring us joy, practising mindfulness, and taking care of our physical health are all vital components of nurturing our self-worth.

Developing and embracing self-worth is a lifelong journey. It requires us to shift our perspective from external validations to an intrinsic understanding of our inherent value. If you’re ready to embrace your self worth, it’s not too late to  join me inside the free 5 day challenge - Empower Your Life.
