Think about it: if you constantly tell yourself that you're not good enough, that you'll never succeed, or that you're destined to fail, how likely are you to put in your full effort and reach your true potential? Those negative thoughts create a cycle of self-doubt and pessimism that becomes almost impossible to break free from.

There were times when a simple setback or criticism would send me into a tailspin. I remember one particular instance when I was at uni and applying for a job as a receptionist. The manager told me that I wasn’t cut out to be a receptionist (no reasons given, just I wasn’t good enough), but would I like to work in his restaurant? Um, no! I left that interview completely deflated and wondering what I’d done wrong. I drove home really beating myself up. 

It was a painful lesson in how destructive our mindset can be if left unchecked. Those negative thoughts had the power to become self-fulfilling prophecies, holding me back from taking risks and pursuing my dreams. And if you’re wondering what happened next, the following week I landed a role as a receptionist at a much better and bigger hotel, and later that year I was selected for the management traineeship program and transferred to Perth. Turns out he did me a favour LOL!

Since then I’ve learned techniques for reframing negative self-talk and developing a more positive, growth-oriented mindset. Simple practices like challenging irrational thoughts, reframing setbacks as opportunities for growth, and using affirmations to rewire our thinking can have a profound impact on our mindset – and, consequently, our lives.
